So you’ve booked your first color analysis session. Maybe you’ve been curious for months, or maybe you just saw one too many TikTok draping videos and finally decided it was time. Either way, you’re probably wondering what actually happens during the appointment.
I get it. Walking into something you’ve never done before can feel a little nerve-wracking, especially when it involves someone studying your face up close. So let me walk you through exactly what to expect when you come to ATX Color Studio, from start to finish, so you can show up feeling relaxed and ready.
The most important thing you can do before your session is come with a clean, bare face. That means no foundation, no concealer, no tinted moisturizer, and no tinted sunscreen. I need to see your natural skin tone to get an accurate read on your coloring. Mascara and brow products are fine, but everything else should be skipped for the day.
If you color your hair, don’t worry about it. I’ll take that into account during your analysis. But if you’re curious, it can be helpful to know your natural hair color (or at least what it used to be) so we can factor that in too.
Wear a simple top in white, gray, or black if you can. This keeps the colors close to your face neutral so they don’t influence what we see during the draping process. And if you forget? That’s okay too. We’ll make it work.
When you walk in, the first thing you’ll notice is the lighting. Color analysis requires specific, controlled lighting to get accurate results, so my studio is set up to give us the most true-to-life view of your skin, hair, and eyes. This isn’t something you can replicate with a ring light at home, and it’s one of the biggest reasons in-person analysis is so precise.
We’ll start by chatting for a few minutes. I want to hear about your current wardrobe, what colors you tend to gravitate toward, what colors you avoid, and what you’re hoping to get out of the session. There are no wrong answers here. This is your time, and it helps me understand where you’re starting from.

This is the part you’ve probably seen on social media, and yes, it’s just as fascinating in person.
I’ll place different colored drapes (large fabric swatches) near your face, one at a time and sometimes side by side, while we both watch what happens. Some colors will make your skin look smooth, bright, and healthy. Others will bring out shadows, redness, or sallowness. The difference can be dramatic, and most clients are genuinely surprised by what they see.
I use a 23-season color analysis system, which goes far beyond the basic “four seasons” approach you might have seen online. Instead of just telling you that you’re a Spring or a Winter, I’m narrowing it down to your specific season within that framework. That precision is what makes your results truly usable in real life, because “you’re a Summer” and “you’re a Dusty Soft Summer” are two very different levels of guidance.
During this process, I’ll explain what I’m seeing and why. This isn’t something that happens to you while you sit quietly. It’s a conversation. By the end of the draping, you’ll actually understand why certain colors work on you and others don’t, not just which ones to pick.
Once we’ve identified your season, I’ll walk you through your personalized color palette. This includes your best shades for clothing, makeup, jewelry metals, and even hair color. You’ll leave with physical color swatches that you can take shopping, hold up against items in your closet, or reference anytime you’re making a color decision.
I’ll also give you recommendations for neutrals (because yes, there are right and wrong neutrals for you), how to wear prints and patterns in your palette, and how to handle colors you love that might not be in your ideal range. Spoiler: you don’t have to throw out your entire wardrobe. It’s about making smarter choices going forward, not starting over.
Plan for about two hours. That gives us plenty of time for the consultation, the full draping process, your results walkthrough, and any questions you want to ask. I never rush through sessions because accuracy matters more than speed. You’re investing in this experience, and I want you to walk out feeling confident, not confused.
If you don’t live in the Austin area, I also offer virtual color analysis sessions. The process is a little different (I’ll send you preparation instructions ahead of time and we’ll work with photos and video), but the results are just as accurate and personalized. Clients all over the country have done virtual sessions and walked away with the same clarity and confidence as my in-person clients.
The thing I hear most often after a first session is, “I can’t believe how obvious it is now.” Once you see the right colors next to your face, you can’t unsee it. Clients tell me they shop differently, get dressed faster, and feel more like themselves in what they’re wearing. Some say it changed the way they think about beauty entirely, because it stops being about trends and starts being about you.
If you’ve been on the fence, I hope this gives you a clear picture of what your session will look like. There’s nothing to be nervous about. You’ll leave knowing exactly which colors make you look and feel your absolute best, and that knowledge sticks with you for life.
Book your in-person or virtual color analysis session at ATX Color Studio and find out what your colors have been trying to tell you.
